COMMON THREADS
We would love you and your community group to be involved in our diocese-wide community craft project!
We are hosting the Jubilee Oak “Table for the Nation” at Lichfield Cathedral from May 2025-April 2026 and are teaming up with The Fabric Vault to create a beautiful table runner to span its 13 meter length, combining the textile art skills of schools, community groups, local businesses and individuals.
WHAT IS THE RUNNER?
The runner will be put together by The Fabric Vault, compiling squares of material decorated by each group. Each square will represent something important to the creators, a moment in the history of the Cathedral or part of the diocese, or simply who they are. Any manner of craft technique can be used- either directly onto the square (fabric pens or paints, embroidery, sewing etc) or sewn onto the square (knitting, crochet, felting, etc etc etc!) Once complete the runner will sit on the table to be viewed by visitors and then remain once the table has moved on as part of its legacy. Interpretation will be created alongside detailing every contributor involved with each square.
HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE?
By creating beautiful squares in your group or at one of our Stitch Clubs! The dimensions are 3x3, 4.5x4.5 or 9x9 and it would be great to see any sort of craft you would like. This can be applied directly to the precut squares, or applied to them afterwards.. You or your group can enter as few or as many as you like (although we may have to select some if lots are made!)
WHERE CAN WE GET OUR BACKING SQUARES?
- Community groups: Squares can be collected and returned at The Fabric Vault (8 Tudor Row, Lichfield) during opening hours. We will log your group and agree a return time for the square(s).
- Stitch Clubs: We are holding twice monthly sessions in the Cathedral for any keen stitchers to contribute that way too.
(Please note, as a working Cathedral we may, in rare cases, need to amend club times or location, but these will be updated periodically so please double check before you leave to come to us! Sessions will always be in the Cathedral or a building in The Close.)
