An expected team of five had suddenly realised they were only four. This was not a massive issue, as we have to remember, that these kind and selfless volunteers give up valuable home time to serve this great City.
It had been a glorious warm day, and as we stepped out it was 17 degrees and Summer dresses and shorts were in abundance.
As we set up at our usual site, the City was relatively calm but busy.
The new location for the taxi rank opposite the Friary was also busy, if a little somewhat disorganised.
We were thanked several times for our commitment to serving people. We replied, with thanks for the kind remarks. One man made a small donation, bless him! As the night went on we supplied a steady stream of teas and coffees. As two of the team went for a perambulation, they returned with a shoeless lady. She had been dancing vigorously in the George 1V establishment, and had broken a shoe heel. She chose a sparkly pair of flip flops, and returned happily to the dance floor.
A walk around the City with a fellow team member revealed it was turning out time at the Garrick, which proved to be a rather busy affair. We also came across an ambulance attending to a man lying on the ground. Tamworth street was very busy, and as the April night temperature began to drop, people who had come out dressed for warmer climes were beginning to shiver as they waited for taxis.
One of our team felt unwell, and was gently encouraged to go home. The mighty three continued in good spirits, shining a bright beacon of welcome. There was a light Police presence on the streets. It was also noted that there were no "homeless folk" about - certainly none of our usual visitors. Was it the warmer weather, or some other intervention?
The ever-supportive Bobby refreshed us with hot chips, and as the City quietened, and our resources began to reduce, we chose to pack up at 1a.m.
As leader I felt proud to be part of such a kind and good humoured team and I thank them for their devotion, and commitment to LNL and other organisations that some of them also help and serve with.
